Whelping

Ensuring that your brood bitch is in goods hands is one of the most important concerns of any owner.  This help to ensure that the most number of pups are whelped and that both brood bitch and pups are strong and healthy.  We are currently installing reverse cycle air conditioned whelping bays so that your brood bitch is not affected by extreme temperatures.

The cost of whelping pups will vary depending on the size of the litter.  The rates are:

    • 1 – 2 pups                                $1,500
    • 3 – 7 pups                                $1,800
    • 8 or more                                 $2,000

This fee includes rearing the pups until three months of age, however immunisation expenses incurred will be an additional owner expense.  At six weeks of age after they have received their first vaccination, the pups will be moved into a small puppy yard where they can run and play.

Rearing

How your greyhound is reared from 3 months until they are ready to be broken in can determine whether your dog will be a champion or just another chaser.  Whilst great bloodlines provide greyhounds with potential, if they have not had the opportunity during their puppy life to form their skeletal and muscular systems they will not perform.

De Vines provide rearing yards that are eighty metres in length and greyhounds love running up and down the yards, strengthening their bodies.  Each of the yards have refrigerator panelled kennels and baths so that your greyhound is comfortable in the most extreme conditions.

The cost of rearing your greyhound is $6 per day, however for large numbers of pups this is negotiable.  All vet expenses incurred whist on the property will be an additional owner expense.

The dogs are fed high quality fresh beef and chicken along with cow milk everyday. In winter we provide cooked stews with vegies and pasta. All dogs on the property are wormed regularly and no shortcuts on their development are taken.

Pre-Training

Pre-Training is the important step where your greyhound learns how to walk on the lead and behave like a race dog.  The dogs are housed in kennels similar to racing dogs so that they learn to make the transition from the yard to kennel.

Dogs are taught to walk on the lead morning and night.  Depending on the dogs maturity they can commence pre-training at twelve months of age and may finish within one to four weeks.
